Completing the mulch in the labyrinth.

September 1, 2022

Finished the rocks around the outside. The mulch was then added in the order that you walk inside the labyrinth.

August 27, 2022

All but the outer ring of rocks complete....

August 21, 2022

It took a few loads of rocks...

August 16, 2022

The labyrinth was created using two centers. The little pyramid noted the "main" center. The two centers were needed to make the swirl effect. Your first impression is to think they are just circles, but really all are half circle arcs using the two centers. The right side arcs use the main center, the left side arcs use the offest center. The small blue tape marks show where each arc starts. I used the yellow tow rope in the previous pictures to spray paint the arcs onto the black plastic. The dotted lines show what it would be like if I made a 6 or so circuit labyrinth. I wanted a huge open area inside instead.

August 16, 2022

The mulch from Clark Seeds arrived! The truck unloaded six cubic yards of mulch.

August 15, 2022

Finished rolling out the black plastic into a 40' x 40' square. I used rocks to keep it blowing away with the wind.

August 15, 2022

Early notes and started to unroll black plastic.

August 7, 2022

Well.. We had to have our septic replaced - which left a big open space. We didn't want trees to have their roots destroy another system, so can up with a labyrinth and wildflower field.

Signs

The Monarch Waystation sign was the first sign installed. I moved it back slightly to allow the 42" riding lawn mower to drive around and not hit it. The others were designed by myself to match the Monarch sign with the White and Green colors.

"Conquer the Clay" Seed Mix

Full Sun Exposure * Soil Moisture Medium, Medium-Dry * USDA Zones 3-7

"This Conquer the Clay seed mix is a tough-as-nails, clay-busting native planting that is designed to beautify difficult, dense plots. Compacted, dumpy clay soils have been historic havens for these colorful trailblazers. Even if the precious topsoil has been worn or torn away, such harsh conditions are no match for these intrepid native plants that have evolved resilient roots to plow through the depths, unearthing scant resources and turning that energy into bursting blooms. Once established, the root systems of these plants can exceed 6 feet deep! Even some of the more demure-looking species are strong enough to tap into the well of nutrients that lies 5-7 feet beneath the layers of clay. It's these tough tappers that allow flowers to bloom up to 10 feet above the surface, towering over what was once bare. Both beautiful and bountiful, pollinators of all shapes and sizes flock to these plants for food and habitat. Birds will perch in taller plants, hunting for insects and feasting on seeds in the fall, while bumblebees go about their business among the many bee-friendly blooms. Butterflies and other insects may flit from flower to flower while raise the next generation of pollinators among these plants, keeping your clumpy clay site alive and buzzing."

Bench

September 17, 2022

September 16, 2024

A bench made with some wood scraps. It was designed in the likeness of a couple benches my father made for his deck around the late 80's or early 90's.

Felt right to have a moon bench! Satin Ink Blue. And had to support the goddess of the house. :)
